PostPosted: May 29, 2015 10:35    Post subject: Re: Collection of Michael Shaw

At this year's Tucson show, there was a Chinese dealer at the TCC Hotel that had quite a few fluorites (in fact, that is all he had), supposedly from Fujian Province. I tried, without success, to get more detailed information about the occurrence, but the language barrier prevented me from finding out anything more about the location. The specimens were quite attractive and hadn't been oiled, which I took as a good sign, so I decided to purchase one thinking that details of the location would eventually come to light. Although the Chinese dealer that had these fluorites was about the only one that had them, I questioned some of the other Chinese dealers at the show. Most didn't seem to know anything about fluorite from Fujian, but a few did, and Fujian was as detailed as they could get. One dealer, who spoke English quite well, was able to tell me that these were recovered during construction of a high-speed train tunnel in Fujian Province.

I had pretty much forgotten about the piece, until I spotted a similar one on Jordi's website. The location given was Youxi, Sanming, Fujian Prov. and the matrix was identical to my specimen, so I knew it was from the same location. Well, after a little research, I was able to determine that Youxi is a county in Fujian Province, under the administration of Sanming City, and the just-completed Xiangtang–Putian high-speed railway runs through Youxi. It also has several tunnels over 10 km in length, so the information provided by the one dealer seemed to make sense.

Very similar material, some with / without small grains of white quartz? as inclusions were coming out in 2014 from the Ruyuan fluorite mine, Ruyuan Co., Shaoguan Prefecture, Guangdong Province, China. This is a prolific locality for green fluorite with quartz.

These were said by the dealer to be coming from a different locality, but I was able to confirm with my Chinese contacts the correct locality.

Does yours have any inclusions, or matrix other than quartz points?

Bob,

The crystals show good transparency and there are no inclusions present. The quartz and fluorites are attached to a small rib of limestone matrix. The crystal form for the Ruyuan fluorites also seems to be predominantly octahedrons.

Mike, your collection is deep and wide. In the Carthage Baryte, I see a peony, only one of your amazing images.
Thanks.

Hi Vic,

Thank you. As for depth and breadth - many folks would say that I lack focus :>), but it gives me great pleasure and that's what counts.

I am terrible at seeing "other" shapes in minerals, unless its very obvious, but that Elmwood Baryte sure does look like a peony now that you mention it.
