Molybdenite is the primary ore for molybdenum (moly). It is generally a by-product of copper mining and is finely disseminated in the porphyry orebodies in the southwestern states of the USA and northern Mexico. The only mine I am aware in the U.S. where wulfenite was mined for its moly content was the Mammoth and Collins mines at Tiger, Arizona USA. This took place from 1914 to 1920, mainly to support the war effort during WWI. Once the large moly deposit at Climax, Colorado USA was discovered, it was no longer economic to mine and process wulfenite as a moly ore. I do not believe the wulfenite at the San Francisco was processed for its moly.

The major Moly deposit in the US is now, I believe, Mount Emmons in Crested Butte, CO and the fight against the mine was turned into a movie called 'Avatar' (in a very round about way). I have collected on Mount Emmons (also called the Red Lady) as my brother lives in Crested Butte (Mt Crested Butte also produces nice Orthoclase twins, not that pretty but neat and easy to find if you know where to look)

This is the final post of photos from the Paris School of Mines. If anyone is EVER in France, make sure to stop by the School of Mines and take a look around. All cases are now locked so you are free to wander around the exhibit cases on your own and take photos. And keep in mind, that these photos are just a SMALL selection of all the minerals on exhibit.

There are SO many great specimens in this museum that it's simply impossible for me to cover everything to everyone's desire.

My hope is that as more people visit this museum, they'll take additional photos and post them to this section Museums with Mineral Exhibits Worldwide. If everyone does this, then eventually we'll all have a pretty good representation of what's on exhibit.

And if everyone everywhere could do this for museums worldwide, then we'd have a truly valuable tools for mineral collectors of all degrees around the world.
