What a suite of Reneville dioptase specimens. One of my first high priced specimens was a dioptase from here, years before Tsumeb produced dioptase. It was a 8cm by 7cm vug that probably cost me $50, purchased from Jim Mueller, a Phoenix, AZ USA dealer. That was around 1966 or 1967. These are fabulous, especially the 4th specimen.

Minerals from the collection starting with the letter E and continuing through to the letter P.

Molybdenite01.jpg
 Mineral: Molybdenite
 Description:
Molybdenite from Madagascar. Now, I'm not a mineralogist (so any of you out there please correct this) but my understanding is that Molybdenite is the most common source of the ore Molybdenum which was highly sought after as an industrial flux. The Wulfenites from the San Francisco Mine in Sonora, Mexico characteristically has botryoidal Mimetites growing on them. Together, these were historically collected and CRUSHED so that they could extract the Molybdenum from them. ABSOLUTELY crazy in today's world of mineral collecting.

As you can see from the Hubnerite photo, most of these pictures were taken using my iPhone.

Here are some more overall photos of the museum so that you can see a bit more of the true beauty and classic style of this museum.

_MuseumWall.jpg
 Description:
As you go up the steps, towards the 2nd floor entrance to the museum, you'll see the walls of the staircase are lined with these huge slabs of agate and jadeite. Upon closer examination, you'll see that these ARE NOT actual slabs. These are paintings made on the wall to look like real slabs. In a way, I can appreciate this dedication and love of the mineral world more than just slabbing rocks and mounting them. Imagine how much work to paint something so realistic.

_MuseumPanoEnd.JPG
 Description:
Another panoramic shot. This is the far end of the museum (previously I uploaded a photo with Museum Curator Eloise Gaillou returning a specimen that had been on exhibit at the Sainte-Maire-aux-Mine Show - this photo is from the same area). Notice the classic display cases and the rows upon rows of wall and floor cases. Absolutely beautiful!!

_MuseumCeiling.jpg
 Description:
Here is another painting dedicated to minerals and mineral collecting. This depicts a king showing his support and appreciation to the hard work of mining and the craft of taking the elements that are mined and turning them into useful objects (armor, urns, plates, etc.). Now the REALLY cool thing about this painting is that it's on the CEILING!!!!! This is in the staircase entry area just before entering the museum.

Molybdenite is the primary ore for molybdenum (moly). It is generally a by-product of copper mining and is finely disseminated in the porphyry orebodies in the southwestern states of the USA and northern Mexico. The only mine I am aware in the U.S. where wulfenite was mined for its moly content was the Mammoth and Collins mines at Tiger, Arizona USA. This took place from 1914 to 1920, mainly to support the war effort during WWI. Once the large moly deposit at Climax, Colorado USA was discovered, it was no longer economic to mine and process wulfenite as a moly ore. I do not believe the wulfenite at the San Francisco was processed for its moly.

The major Moly deposit in the US is now, I believe, Mount Emmons in Crested Butte, CO and the fight against the mine was turned into a movie called 'Avatar' (in a very round about way). I have collected on Mount Emmons (also called the Red Lady) as my brother lives in Crested Butte (Mt Crested Butte also produces nice Orthoclase twins, not that pretty but neat and easy to find if you know where to look)

Some Wulfenites.

This is the final post of photos from the Paris School of Mines. If anyone is EVER in France, make sure to stop by the School of Mines and take a look around. All cases are now locked so you are free to wander around the exhibit cases on your own and take photos. And keep in mind, that these photos are just a SMALL selection of all the minerals on exhibit.

Thanks Bryan. But no malachite pseudomorphs after (octahedral) cuprite from Chessy?

I was really looking forward to seeing some. Oh well, il n'a pas de quoi, eh?

Thanks again for an enlightening and colorful post.

There are SO many great specimens in this museum that it's simply impossible for me to cover everything to everyone's desire.

My hope is that as more people visit this museum, they'll take additional photos and post them to this section Museums with Mineral Exhibits Worldwide. If everyone does this, then eventually we'll all have a pretty good representation of what's on exhibit.

And if everyone everywhere could do this for museums worldwide, then we'd have a truly valuable tools for mineral collectors of all degrees around the world.
