Hi Adrian!

Limonite is not an IMA approved name. I think it should be named goethite instead, which chemically is hydrated FeO(OH). You may want to read its Mindat.org page for more details.

I was not aware of this. Thanks for letting me know.
Limonite is still a very used term characterizing unidentified, massive hydroxides and/or oxides of iron. Discriminating macroscopically between the various terms of the iron oxides to hydroxides serie is pretty difficult so a ``generic`` name without much structural connotation is useful. But if it is not in the standard i will go with hydrated goethite.

The purple specimen you have marked:
unknown, Hunan Province, PR China

is Fluorite and if I had to guess I'd say it is from:
De'an fluorite mine, Wushan, De'an Co., Jiujiang Prefecture, Jiangxi Province, China

I'd also guess that your gold comes from:
Roşia Montană (Verespatak; Vöröspatak; Goldbach), Alba Co., Romania

It is a good possibility, but I'm afraid it is impossible to be sure if it is from Roşia Montană or from some of the other numerous gold localities of the Hunedoara and Alba Districts, so in the doubt we fixed it as "Romania" just to be sure it is not a mistake ;-)

BTW, please any doubtful or unknown locality or mineral species please submit first in the "What is it? - Where is it from?" section and after approval then upload it to this section.

Thank you

PostPosted: Jun 03, 2015 09:48    Post subject: Re: Adrian Pripoae Collection

Thank you for all the suggestions.
Rosia Montana is definitely a possibility but also another 10-15 other places. In my opinion a more suitable solution in this case is to mention the metalogenetical affiliation. In this case: Southern Apuseni Mountains Province, Neogen Volcanic District (also known as Golden Quadrilateral). Mineralizations are associated with intermediate to acid vulcanites and are of late hydrotermal type. Principal elements are Cu, Pb, Zn, Au (+As;Te), Ag, Bi, etc. There are several mineral with the original occurrence situated in this zone. Nagyágite is the best know named after the hungarian name (Nagyág) of the type locality (Sacarimb, Romania) - https://www.mindat.org/min-2830.html.
Attached you have a map indicating the main occurrences in the Golden Quadrilateral and also a geological map of the region (Conventional signs are the international geological standard).

PS
I got my university degree in geology at Bucharest University in Romania and I worked as a student for 2 summers in the region.

Thank you so much Adrian. Unfortunately "Southern Apuseni Mountains Province, Neogen Volcanic District" doesn't match the geography/topography we use. Would
"Apuseni District, Alba, Romania" be acceptable?

"Apuseni District" refers at a region geographically situated in the Apuseni Montains in western part of Romania, specifically in the Transylvania historic province. In my opinion this represents a very large area and is a generic name. Alba - represents the name of an "judet" - county an administrative sub division currently in use. Taken into account the size - Apuseni district is much larger than a county and is composed of Arad, Bihor, Cluj, Alba, Hunedoara (judete) counties. I assume that the county name would be sufficient for a knowledgeable person to localize a specific specimen if the actual location (locality, mine, etc.) is unknown.
