Description: |
Himalaya Mtns at 9,000 to 13,000 feet Large galena crystal attached to a quartz group Due to the encrusted surface concealing the galena this one was a challenge to identify. Finally someone chipped off a corner to reveal the galena. Its very heavy weight made galena a candidate from the start. |

Posted: Feb 18, 2018 17:09 Post subject: Tucson Show 2018 - The New Discoveries! |
|
|
Barcelona 02/18/2018
Definitively the new discoveries in Tucson this year has been very scarce. In fact, as far as I know, there have only been three real novelties, the Fluorites of Madagascar, the Quartz of the District of Kullu in the Indian Himalayas and the Golds of the Serra Dourada, Brazil. The other "novelties" have been mostly re-findings.
Is curious that in a year in which the plethora of fabulous minerals were even better than in previous editions there have been so few new discoveries…
México:
Following the general tendency there were not new things in Mexico although it is true that you can describe as "new" the numerous Barytes found in the volcán vein of the San Diego Mine at the Santa Bárbara mining district in Chihuahua.
In the "revisited" chapter, the San José mine in Oaxaca has once again given a significant quantity of crystallized silver sulfides that should have to be analyzed but in which it seems there may be Acanthite, Pyrargyrite, Miargyrite and perhaps some other species. Also revisited are the new Paradamites from the Ojuela mine, of great quality.
India:
Impressive alpine geode-fissure in the valleys of the Himalayas, in the District of Kullu, India. As already explained and seen in the video of Tucson Show 2018 - New spectacular quartz from Northern India! this is an impressive find that will surely have continuity and probably will give a lot to talk about in the future
Madagascar:
Great surprise for the new Fluorites of Madagascar, an island that is not exactly famous for that mineral species. Large crystals with good color and slightly dichroic have been found recently close the Mandronarivo area, Beroroha District, Atsimo Andrefana Region, Toliara Province, Madagascar. One of the few real novelties of this edition of the Tucson Show.
Brazil:
New Golds, potent, from a locality not known until now: Serra Dourada in Mato Grosso, Brazil. As you can see in the photo, they are of great quality and good size. With luck and if they are still finding more specimens in the future, they can become a classic.
Congo D.R.:
New finding of exceptional Carrollites at the Kamoya South II Mine. It is difficult to say if they are better or not than those of the famous findings of 2001-2002 but in any case they are extraordinary.
Peru:
In the recent years Peru seems to have been specialized in the Axinites. As if they were not enough, the two new recently discovered deposits are now adding a new one: Raipa, Aija Province, Ancash Department, which is giving large pieces filled with also large crystals that form spectacular groups.
As you can see there was not much new. If until now at the major Shows many small finds filled well the chapter of the new discoveries, in this Tucson 2018 the number of new discoveries has been very low, although it is true that the few that have been found are of great interest.

In https://www.mineral-forum.com/message-board/viewtopic.php?p=60599#60599 Bob Harman wrote: | Hi Jordi!
Interesting observations ( https://www.mineral-forum.com/message-board/viewtopic.php?p=60598#60598 ), but not totally unexpected. Wherever there is a large and major mineral or fossil show, over time, there might be many additional small shows springing up.
Are the newer small shows having "dealers" selling all or part of their own (or a friend's) collection? Are the "dealers" buying stuff one day only to flip it at a higher price the next day (phenomenon that has gone on in some long standing venues for years)? Or are these "dealers" simply new ones and additional ones to the longer attending dealers that have populated the established Tucson Show venues for years? Or might they be newer younger dealers just starting out and trying to save a few dealership bucks until they get established?
Like you, I feel this trend certainly makes for an excessively long and widely spread out show. Do you think it negatively impacts all the other long standing venues?
Anyway, all interesting food for thoughts and discussions. BOB |
To summarize:
- What I saw were the same classic dealers exhibiting in many more venues than in previous years.
- I did not see the young people who should renovate this hobby exhibit in these new places. In fact some young people who appeared last year at Tucson's New Mineral Show and who brought very interesting pieces, this year were no longer there and I saw them working for other dealers...
- I do not know if these new venues are going to impact or not the classic Shows. In fact my general state is of confusion because this year has been different from what I knew and I am still trying to process those changes.

If anyone has high-resolution photographs or links to them of the MAD case or Ralph Clark's display, would you please share them with us?
