Hello.

A quick visit to the minerals of Carrara marble, before temporarily leaving the mainland Tuscany to move on to insular one.

The marlbe from the Apuan Alps (Carrara, Massa, Lucca provinces) provided dozens of species with millimeter or sub-millimeter crystals, with the exception of quartz and a few other minerals which appeared in centimeter size.
Here are a few.

Best regards.

Hello.

I spent five months on the minerals from Tuscany: too many, even for the most patient of the users.
However, before moving on to another Italian region, I want to show some minerals from the two major islands of the Tuscan archipelago: Elba and Giglio.

The island of Giglio is sadly known for the tragedy of the Costa Concordia ship, the 13th of January of 2012.
Mindat lists 58 mineral species in this locality, which was already exploited for iron by the Etruscans and Romans.

Here are some examples of the island's mineralogy.

Best regards.
Sante

PostPosted: Sep 14, 2020 17:39    Post subject: Re: Collection of Sante Celiberti - A mineralogical trip through Italy

Hello.

Most collectors connect the island of Elba to the beautiful pyritohedra accompained by hematite and to the rare elbaite crystals.
But Mindat lists for this island 198 species with 15 type localities (among which Pollucite, Uvite, Elbaite and Ilvaite).
Furthermore, as far as I know, this is the only locality that has given its name to two minerals: Elbaite and Ilvaite (ILVA was the ancient Latin name for ELBA).

Let me show you a part of my Elban sub-collection which I've assembled over 50 years.
As far as pyrite is concerned, I will avoid publishing the classic pyritohedra present in many collections and I will limit myself to the less common habits.

Best regards.
Sante

Hi Sante,

wonderful diversity of Elba minerals. I only had three specimens from Elba in my life, two hematites and a pyrite, so I'm not an expert on minerals from that island. But there are several gorgeous Elba specimens on display here at the Marburg Museum, among them an outstanding elbaite on matrix. A friend of mine who collects and deals minerals for 40 years once said during a museum visit that this tourmaline would be the one specimen he would pick if he could take one from the museum's collection.

Sante Celiberti wrote:
Furthermore, as far as I know, this is the only locality that has given its name to two minerals: Elbaite and Ilvaite (ILVA was the ancient Latin name for ELBA).
Elba is great, no question, but I think Tsumeb outnumbers that and gave its name to at least 4 or 5 minerals ;-)

Regards
Tobi

Hi, Tobi.

Thank you for your friendly words and for your wonderful picture which enhanced my thread.
And, yes, I agree with you that Tsumeb gave its name to five species; but, since four of these names are composite, I thought only "Tsumebite" could be compared with "Elbaite" and "Ilvaite". However, a marginal issue.
Congratulations on your two very beautiful last acquisitions: I too love the timeless charm of quartz.
Stay well.

Some specimens more from Elba island.

Best regards.
Sante
