Thank both of you for stepping up. I have always loved rocks i have lots of them. Im 54 years old and am amazed by the amount of matter out there. I got this rock with the fossil I have heard some creatures could eat rock. So just a thought since the previous owner had collected it. I also appreciate the people who did respond for being polite even if may have been not the best answer.

Also is this a type of object that someone would save or want to collect?

Collecting is in the eye of the beholder. People collect all sorts of things, and if you'd like to keep it, then keep it.

That said, I would wager that most people who frequent this forum wouldn't keep something like this unless they had self collected it. We are a forum celebrating minerals, especially those with beautiful or interesting or rare properties of some interest to someone with some knowledge of the subject.

What you have is a fossil specimen, and although i am no expert in fossils, i honestly do not believe it is an especially good one. But there is an old coal mine near me where collecting used to be allowed. I have collected fossils there not much better than what you have and i keep them because they remind me of how much fun i had collecting them. If you want to learn more about fossils, there must be fossil collecting sites out there where you can get more information.

Good luck.
