Purchased item with no information. Quartz points with unknown brown matrix type. Would like possible locality and more.

| I'm having trouble seeing the crystallography, but this is a dead ringer for baryte from the Book Cliffs area, Mesa County, Colorado. The baryte often forms slender prisms like these. If you look down the length of the crystal, baryte will be four sided, quartz six sided in nearly all cases.

Thanks, just checked with a loupe, I see multiple six (6) pointed. I may set up my microscope for pictures later. These are with a cell phone.

| And with a second look, the matrix doesn't look quite right for Book Cliffs, especially in the third photo. James is right, the reddish brown crystals (if they are crystals) look like siderite.

Where did you buy it?
It looks a bit like an alpine-type fissure specimen, because the cavity has opened perpendicular to the bedding of the host rock.
It reminds me of specimens from Vizille and Belledonne.

more pictures. image #6 shows a flat blade at 3 on the right. Looks like sand stone matrix where as I think of siderite as a very hard subtance.

I agree.
Allevard and Mésage (in the same Alpine area) could also be two possible candidates.
Any traces of pyrite would strengthen the Mésage hypothesis.

| If the brown mineral is ankerite then the Jeffrey Quarry in Arkansas is a possible location

I thought the same, looks French and reminds me of Allevard or surrounding area. No guarantee for sure, but it looks really distinctive ...
