Galena has always been among one of my favorite minerals and my collection contains 83 galena specimens. My first specimen of lead sulfide came from the Joplin area of the Tri-State District and consisted of several simple cubes on chert. Over the years I have been able to accumulate many more Tri-State specimens, a few of which are featured in this post.

|
Dimensions: | 6.0 x 7.0 cm |
Description: |
A classic Tri-State galena crystal with cuboctahedral fortification overgrowths. |

Wonderful samples from Tri-State-District, hard to pick a favourite!

It's also one of my favourite minerals and besides the classic German ones (Neudorf/Harz, Freiberg/Erzgebirge or several western localities in Siegerland, Sauerland or Eifel Mountains) I like U.S. galenas (Tri-State-District and Viburnum Trend) the most. Ok, and Dalnegorsk. And some English ones ;-)

Are all of the mines in the Tri-State area now permanently closed? As per the U. S. health codes. Any Museums or visitor centers open. I know a lady that worked at one of the mines as did her father.

All of the Tri-State District mines are now closed. The last mine to close was the Swalley Mine in Baxter Springs, Kansas in 1970. There are several museums in the area that display specimens from the district. The Everett J. Ritchie Tri-State Mineral Museum in Joplin, Missouri has a good display of minerals from the district as well as mining artifacts, mining models, maps, and historical photographs. It is located in the Joplin Museum Complex in Schifferdecker Park.

Somehow I forgot to post one of my all-time favourite specimens here. This killer galena from Neudorf was on display in the Marburg Museum some years ago, it belongs to a museum in Dresden/Saxony and is one of the most thrilling mineral specimens I have seen in my life (sorry for the bad photo I made some years ago):
Mineral: | Galena, siderite |
Locality: | Neudorf, Harzgerode mining district, Harz, Saxony-Anhalt/Sachsen-Anhalt, Germany | |
|
Dimensions: | 20-25 cm, crystal sizes 5-7 cm (!!!) |
Description: |
This is THE favourite galena for me |
