Hello Tobi:

Many thanks for your kind words. I suspect that black minerals are not a favourite with many collectors. I see this in the pricing – the lower the iron content of Sphalerite, the greater the price. The ruby red gemmy variants can cost as much as rubies – lol.

I know what you mean, Silvia, but I think it's somehow understandable. Sphalerite in general is a common mineral and even in good crystals it's not that rare. But the red & gemmy ones are something special and thus really expensive. I mean, it's a transparent gemmy sulfide - you don't find that often ;-) I have some translucent (not really gemmy) sphalerites (Germany, Bulgaria & Kazakhstan) in my collection and I really love them but I also like "ordinary" sulfides in grey or black, that's why galena is one of my favourite minerals ;-) Don't forget what I said some time ago in Michael Shaw's collection thread:

Right, some collectors are only into colours and refuse black minerals, but there's also a huge fan base for black and grey, otherwise things like manganite, schorl, cassiterite, galena, stibnite, hematite or several rare silver ores (just to mention a few) would not have become so popular in the mineral collection world :-)
I think judging by the colour is not only stupid when it's about people but also when it's about minerals :-)

Best regards
Tobi

I think people on the hunt for an old German manganite or a good Xuebaoding cassiterite won't agree ;-)

A German Manganite was always on my 'must find a good one' list. I did eventually find one but then sold it when I narrowed the focus of my collection

Many thanks for your kind words. I do appreciate the vote of confidence. It was not an easy mineral to photograph, and I took many photos until i was happy.

Musonoi Open Pit

The Musonoi mine has been a locality for many world-class uranium, copper, and cobalt bearing minerals (Oosterbosch et al. 1964, Gauthier et al. 1989). The mine is located in the Democratic Republic of Congo on the outskirts of the mining town of Kolwezi in an area known as the Katanga Copperbelt. The ore-bodies of the Musonoi mine, and the nearby Kamoto mine, have been mined since the beginning of the 20th century for copper and cobalt. Initially, the Musonoi mine was mined for Chalcocite and Digenite.

The specimen comprises a vuggy Quartz matrix hosting many well-formed crystals of Meta-Torbernite.

Usually Meta-torbernite is a dehydration pseudomorph of Torbernite. However the specimens from El Sherana were formed by direct deposition from a supersaturated solution, which produced true crystalline Meta-torbernite, with a dark green colour, translucent diaphaneity and a vitreous lustre.

A note from Les Presmyk on the Copper Queen location.
As a general statement there are very few verifiable azurites and malachite’s from the Copper Queen mine and the few that I know of are fairly average. The Copper Queen mine only operated from 1884 to 1888, when the Czar and Holbrook mines were developed and opened. In addition, these became the primary specimen producers for the next 10 or 15 years. And, if you have any of my labels saying they are from the Copper Queen, they are wrong. This is the result of the research I did for our book. And I don't remember how many dozens of labels I had to change as well.
