The texture is quite grainy, seems to be made of amalgamated sand grains. Found near red sandstone/mudstone cliffs. Could this be an ancient sand rose?

Looks like a sandstone pebble, but the photo is not great.

Not really.

It may help to know where it was found, but I think I can say with certainty that it isn't a sand rose of any sort, ancient or otherwise. That would require it to be a sandstone cemented by selenite, and it would have a well-defined form. This looks like an eroded pebble.

Oh fair enough, maybe it's just that. I was wondering what's causing the texture with these coarse elongated holes. Is it due to erosion or the way the pebble formed?

It's from the south Devon coast.

As it has been rolled in the sea that softer parts will have been eroded more quickly leaving deeper cavities
