Hello Alexey,

I am not a sphere collector but the 'Jaspilite' sphere attracted my attention since I live in Michigan and assume the material used for the spheres came from the Marquette Iron Range where there are outcrops of this type of material. If you know the source of the rock used to make the sphere I would be most interested.

Have collected a few examples as "garden rock" not far from Ishpeming, Michigan where there are surface outcrops of this material.

Best regards,

George

Hello again,

Since I have the book on my desk should note there is a good image of banded and contorted 'jaspilite' in the book Mineralogy of Michigan (Heinrich and Robinson), fig 10, page 23. There is a rock hammer in that image for scale but collecting material at Jasper Knob is not permitted as it is a park.

Hello again Alexey,

Thank you. It is amazing how similar the material you made the sphere from is to the rock we have in northern Michigan! Do you know the age of the deposit and is it from an iron deposit region of the Ukraine? My understanding is that rocks of this type are very old, formed prior to the time when the earth had significant oxygen in the atmosphere.

Sorry I am not a geologist and have never taken a course in that subject. Perhaps others on this forum can further inform he both of us. But the similarity of your material to what occurs in Michigan is really striking.

George

George

Yes, this rock is from an iron deposit region of the Ukraine.
Look what they said,

"Jaspelit is developed mainly in pre-Cambrian geological period layers, where they form large iron-ore deposits, for example Kryvyi Rih (Ukraine), and Kursk magnetic anomaly (THE USSR), Lake Superior (THE USA), Minas Gerais (Brazil), TsinghBhum (India) etc
"

As you can see, you was right. They are very simillar.

It was in Russisan firstly, this is my translation, so sorry for possible mistakes.

Here more jaspelit sphere
