Hello Heimo. You put a smile on my dial this morning! I am hoping to experience the desert first hand next month. More photos please.

Thanks for posting these photos Heimo - they bring back some memories.

A must-read book for any geologist (or not) planning a trip to the Namib desert is "The Sheltering Desert" by Henno Martin (see the related Wikipedia entry).
I guess this advice does not apply to you Pierre & Heimo - you have probably read this classic autobiographical story more than one time!

Thank you very much Heimo for sharing your photo's of the Namib Desert. The scenery looks beautiful, and the Rossing Mountains look like a great place to climb around and look for pockets! I guess other people have been there and done that already; or is there still some exploration to be done?
Regards, Mike

Hello Mike, unfortunately the Rössing mountains now form part of the Dorob National Park and exploration is only allowed if in possession of an applicable permit. next month we have a short trip to the Brandberg, where random exploration is still allowed.
Kind regards, Heimo

Great pictures Heimo. Looks like easy access to the top of the mountain! The rock (presumably granite) looks like it is rich in miarolitic cavities... The 'stripey' rock formation on the left of photo IMG_0819.JPG looks interesting, I can't work out what it is, not seen that before.
Cheers, Mike

Thanks Mike. Access looks a bit easier from the top than from the bottom. Regarding the rock formation I am unfortunately not able to give any detail information.

PostPosted: Nov 09, 2015 10:41    Post subject: Re: The Namib Desert

I hope this is the right thread to post the following pictures.

These are three massive specimens from Erongo, which I actually came across on a building site in the desert and which I really want to share with the members of the forum. Unfortunately these specimens are beyond my budgetary limits.

Sizes given are fairly accurate and damage is surprisingly little.

ENJOY!

Very clean and very little damage so well done the miners :-)
