Gail,
very nice to have photographed the exhibits in your Gail Spann's 2012 East Coast Gem and Mineral Show report. Always cool to see the original specimen beside the painting.

Question for you, on photo DSC_0354.JPG, the one of Dianna Weinrich in front of her booth with the 50% signs, at the back of the pictures, on the column, there is a sign with "No Photo Allowed"......was that for the show or a specific dealer or a joke or...what is the fine print below.

Cheers
Jean

I asked Marty Zinn, the show promoter, if I could take photos. He heartily agreed. I also didn't take any mineral specimens photos without permission from the dealers. People photos, well...that's a different story, but I always said what I was doing with them and everyone thought it fun to be in the report. I knew about the "no photo allowed" so was very aware of that policy. I should imagine that people's photos might be used in a bad way such as shoplifting ( there were, sadly, a few cases we were told about. )

Thanks Gail,

Is this a new policy at Marty's shows? I do not ever recall seeing a sign like this at Tucson or Denver.

Jean, the rule I go by, related to specimen shots, is to ask the owner if I may take a photo, it's up to them. Being on staff of the East Coast Show, I'm quite sure there is no promoter driven policy against photo taking, again, it's up to the dealer. I know of teams of shop lifters who use digital camera photos to plan their moves, not wasting their time on baubles and going for the high end stuff. Having worked lots of shows, as staff, I've seen very sophisticated misdirections, simple palmings, and teams that work very efficiently to gain their loot. They are always a problem at shows, and hard to stop.

I agree, I always ask permission and state the purpose of the photo to the dealer. But seeing the sign on Gail photo was simply a surprise. I was unaware that Marty had those up.
Cheers

I moved here the 5 posts related with the topic of the photo's permission in order to make more coherent the Gail's thread: Gail Spann's 2012 East Coast Gem and Mineral Show report

Thanks to all who are publishing posts of Springfield Show!

I think this will close my coverage of the East Coast Gem and Mineral Show, thanks for watching, I've got to get back to real life.
