Today we conclude this "fast tour" through Belgium with the showcase 9. Then we will continue with the former Belgian colonies: D.R.Congo, Rwanda and Burundi.

The display case N ° 9 is basically dedicated to the porphyry quarry of Quenast, one of the largest quarries in Europe. Quenast has been and continues to be –together with other nearby quarries such as Bierghes- the primary source of porphyry rocks for construction in Belgium and the north of France.

The porphyry rocks in this area of the Silurian period (about 435 million years ago), formed during the Caledonian orogeny, in a subvolcanic environment associated with a subduction zone (Gondwana subducted under Avalonia).

Now the rest of the showcase N° 10...

Gold dust
The glass tube is about 9 cm long, containing 0.2 g.
This gold dust was in the collection of Jean Soudan (BE), which was sent with the army to the Belgian Congo in 1960 to maintain order after the declaration of independence. The curiosity is that this gold powder was exchanged to the local people by cigarettes.
