PostPosted: Jan 07, 2011 20:22    Post subject: I wanted a list of minerals and localities from Mexico with good rough material

Since I like the idea of a collection focusing on rough and cut pairs from Mexico, I wanted to start a list of potential minerals and localities from which I might be able to get good rough and cut pairs. So far I am aware of the following. Please add to the list if you know of any others that I can look out for.

Danburite - Charcas, San Luis Potosi
Apatite - Cerro de Mercado
Anorthite Var. Bytownite - Dorado Mine, Casas Grandes, Chihuahua
Amethyst - Mun. Las Vigas de Ramírez, Veracruz
Amethyst - Amititlan, Guerrero
Topaz - various sites: San Luis Potosi, Zacatecas, Durango, Guanajuato, Guerrero

This list has been seen faceted or rough good enough too cut has been seen. Some are very rare or small in cut stones.

Nifontovite - Charcas SLP
Fluorite - Rodeo DGO
Calcite - Mapimi DGO (honey yellow, but not convinced that the rough I have is from there)
Legrandite - Mapimi DGO
Calcite - Rosarito BCN
Demantoid - Piedra Parada VER
Rhodochrosite - Santa Eulalia CHIH
Creedite - Santa Eulalia CHIH
Smoky Quartz with garnet inclusions - Xaltianguis GRO
Pyrargyrite - Fresnillo ZAC (The cut stones look black)
Grossular (raspberry garnet) - Sierra de Cruces COAH (unfractured rough is small)
Aquamarine - Guadalcazar SLP

Hi Turbo,

I separated this two posts from the original thread "Calling all Mexico Experts" -> https://www.mineral-forum.com/message-board/viewtopic.php?t=1489 , and created this new thread in order to keep the threads coherent.

Thank you for your entries here.

Jordi

Thanks Jordi. That was a good idea. And thanks Dennis for your additions to the list. It looks like I can start a respectable display with this list.

Jordi...can you paste my last posting to the original thread onto this...I expanded the list.

Is this limited to faceting rough...if we're talking cuttting marterials it gets out of hand real fast

I would narrow it down to "rough" specimens that are complete crystals/fit for display for which matching cut gemstones can be obtained. I don't mean rough in the sense of fragments.

Hello, you're material to facet, gem quality, I know a material saw owls, Camargo Chiuahua, some people say they are tears of apache, but I have my doubts as there are very few and hard to find, and most Interestingly, olive green in color. I have only a couple, maybe we can exchange, and there is another material they call peaks Serro moon stone, is really beautiful carved Naica this near Chihuahua.
