Copper Cliff mine, Phoenix, Keweenaw County, Michigan, USA 10.8 x 6 x 4 cm. Owned by A. E. Seaman Mineral Museum - Former John T. Reeder collection. Photo: A. E. Seaman Mineral Museum
To lead the Michigan State nothing better than one of the images downloaded by John Jaszczak in the great thread "A. E. Seaman Mineral Museum, Michigan T. University, Houghton, Michigan" ( http://www.mineral-forum.com/message-board/viewtopic.php?t=1416 )
Thank you John! |

Here is a lovely copper with a small calcite crystal and micro datolite crystals from the Quincy Mine, Hancock, Michigan. The copper shows some dodecahedral crystals with edges modified by trapezohedral faces. It is 7.3 x 7 x 5 cm overall, and was originally in the John T. Reeder collection, now in the A. E. Seaman Mineral Museum collection.

These copper crystals have the morphology of laumontite and appear to be pseudomorphs. The crystals are approximately 1 cm tall. Franklin Mine, Hancock, Michigan. Ex John T. Reeder collection now in the A. E. Seaman Mineral Museum.

Sulfurs from this quarry are really fine- probably not getting the attention they deserve. I personally collected small crystals there in the late 1980's. The A. E. Seaman Mineral Museum has a fine collection of sulfur and celestine from
this locality.

Is this truly a pseudomorph (sulfur after celestine)? It sure doesn't look like one judging by the photograph. The morphology is perfectly correct for sulfur and it appears to be a single crystal, not what one sees in pseudomorphs.
Are there other known examples?

Hi Antonio, a very nice sulphur specimen. I never heard of that quarry before, but these specimen nearly looks like from one of the famous mines on Sicily, really great!

Hi Tobias,
neither I knew that locality when I got the specimen. Little enchanting surprises of collecting minerals!!
In my case it is usually a bit easier to improve my collection after reading a lot here about minerals all over the world. But regarding this sulphur the specimen came first and then the Forum :-)
Cheers
