Pete, the last few photomicrographs are beautiful-it never ceases to amaze me, the closer you look, the more fantastic it gets. Thanks for all your posts, what a resource!

Love the sphalerite in fluorite. What a great micro!

Amazing pictures, but especially the right-angle pyrite. Thanks, Pete.

Wow Pete!
John White is correct: the sphalerite in fluorite is amazing! I cannot believe that you can take such a great photo of a specimen that is less than 1 mm wide. Fantastic work! I like all of the others specimens and photos too, but that particular one really gives me an appreciation for micros.
Thanks for your posts.

Pete's photos are an excellent illustration of why some of us (including me) think micromounts are generally more interesting, more beautiful and more impressive than cabinet specimens. (Of course, it also doesn't hurt that I can actually afford to buy a few really good ones, whereas I can only afford mediocre cabinet specimens.)

Thanks for all the praise for my images. I feel like I stole the Ohio show, which was not my intent. There are many superb macro specimens of celestite, calcite, fluorite, and sphalerite with wonderful color and interesting crystal forms, only a few of which you've seen. Sorry that I and others have not been able to fill out this category more completely.
I might also mention the pyrite from the Duff Quarry, which has an amazing and confusing range of unusual forms that generally suggest a football (European style). I don't have any digital images, but these specimens are common and several descriptions have been published. My own is old but useful:
Richards, R.P. 1987. Pyrite crystals from the Duff Quarry. Mineralogical Record 18: 391-398.
Unfortunately, it does not appear to be available on the web.

Here is a 1.3 mm sphalerite crystal, also from the Bluffton Stone Co. Quarry, Bluffton, Ohio. Purple fluorite and white dolomite crystals also occurred in the same fracture. I collected this on a trip in May 1989 with John Medici.
