Henri Léon Ungemach (1882-1936).

The mineralogical collection of H. Ungemach, a Alsacian chemical engineer, PhD in mineralogy Strasbourg, is located in the University of Liege, Belgium (ULG), since the '30s (Prof. Frederic Hatert).
This collection is rich in specimens gathered in historical sites.
It is always with excitement that I manipulate these objects studied there for over 80 years by a prominent mineralogist, who was close to famous masters, such as G. Friedel (Strasbourg), G. Cesaro (ULG), H. Buttgenbach (ULG), J.D.H. Donnay (ULG)...
Roger.

Hi List,
This Kongsberg silver seems to have an unusual crystal habit for Kongsberg.

A big thanks for opening the doors to these hidden treasures...of my own country!

Hello Valere
It would be difficult to visit the Museum of Liège because there is no Museeum since the transfer of the laboratory from the City Centre to the Sart Tilman locality.
Professor Hatert is just busy creating a new room to highlight these specimens. At the same time, he will publish a catalog of these minerals and some publications. This is also why I limit myself to the presentation of a few minerals here.
It was not until a year, because it is obviously not the main work of this very active teacher in the field of Research and Education. So we must wait.
Roger.

Gold - La Gardette (Oisans), Isere.

The La Gardette mine is known since the early 18th century. It was operated for the marketing of its quartz crystals.
Gold was found there but its abundance is very relative. The gold production was about 3 kg since its discovery.
La Gardette is also the type locality for the La Gardette twinning of quartz (individuals with an angle of 84 ° 33). It has been described by Weiss in 1829. The La Gardette twin is now called Japan Twin .

Hi,
This is one of the rarest minerals, MOSCHELLANDSBERGITE
Ag2Hg3, Mercury Silver (silver amalgam).
This mineral is rarely crystallized as well as this specimen. We can distinguish the faces of the cube {001} and rhomb-dodecahedron {101}.
It is difficult to take a picture because this specimen shines like a drop of mercury.
H. Ungemach gives Mexico as the origin. I would like to hear from Peter Megaw about the origin of this moschellandsbergite.
Roger.

Hi,
Rescheidt, a small locality in Eifel (Germany) for Galena?
Fine example of the privileged crystal growth on edges.

Hi,

Rescheid (without t-ending) was one of the most important lead mining districts in the Northern part of the Eifel region. The biggest mine was "Wohlfahrt" and i think, the shown crystal comes from that mine. Galena cubes up to 15 cm and more were not uncommon in the old days... Rescheid is not far away from Mechernich, probably a more known locality.

Cheers
Andreas

Hello Andreas, all,
Here is a crystal of galena seldom seen.
It comes from Bernkastel near Freiberg, I think.
This is a pseudomorph of pyromorphite.
Roger.
