The land in the middle of Germany mainly consists of mountain and hill ranges and thus is a mineral-rich region, though it does not have that many classics for collectors. The most important localities are in the north where Thuringia borders the Harz Mountains.

Gee whiz, this looks so much like the fluorites from the Blanchard Mine, Bingham, New Mexico.
.
Must be a similar geologic setting. Quite remarkable!

Hi Ed, I somehow forgot your post until I browsed this thread again today.
They actually are different from the Blanchard specimens: The Caaschwitz fluorites are rather purple and never sky-blue. And they are all quite small while the Blanchard Mine produced larger cubes. However, I can fulfill your wish of more postings with a close-up of the Caaschwitz fluorite specimen :-)
Cheers!

Is the color stable in sunlight? Blanchard fluorite will fade from blue to clear, and remain that way.

Good question, I don't know. I have the Caaschwitz specimen for one and a half years now, and it has not changed. But I also have a blue Blanchard Mine specimen for the same time and it has not changed, either ... maybe such fading processes take quite long (I hope so) ...?

Hi,
The Caaschwitz fluorites are rather stable in their colour (however, you shouldn´t put them in direct sunlight...), not as, for example, the blue crystals from Halsbrücke/Saxony.
Cheers

The Ronneburg uranium mining district is known for excellent mineral specimens such as variscite, wavellite, whewellite, gypsum and varíous systematic rarities. Here´s an old variscite/wavellite combo found in 1970:

Not my taste, but I know many collectors consider this a holy grail of German minerals:
Mineral: | Manganite |
Locality: | Ilfeld, Nordhausen, Nordhausen District, Thuringia/Thüringen, Germany

Like the Pöhla barytes. Nice pieces but fairly overrated.

Since Jordi picked up all that stuff it´s so hard to get a more or less satisfying strontioginorite specimen here in Germany...
Mineral: | Strontioginorite |
Locality: | Kohnstein Quarry, Niedersachswerfen, Nordhausen District, Thuringia/Thüringen, Germany
|
Dimensions: | Picture width: 10 cm, crystals up to 3 cm, total specimen 16 x 13 cm |
