I am planning to do some rock hounding in Colorado during a summer vacation. I am trying to narrow down the many possible spots to just a few close to where I will be staying. I found a description of an area called the Green Ridge Peamatite in the book "Colorado Rockhounding" by Stephen Voynick.
The area extends from Lonesome Peak in a north-west direction to Lake Granby. The book mentions this area may be challenging since it is heavily wooded. Does anyone have any collecting tips for this area? Thanks. _________________ DSD |

There is a geologic map of the so-called pegmatite in Ives' article in Rocks & Minerals. Eckel (1997) has the citation. The so-called pegmatite is at least 2 miles by 4 miles in size - obvious not possible for this part of Colorado. The area delineated is a possible pegmatite-bearing area. Specific locations can be 1) prospected on foot by traversing countryside, 2) check BLM records for old pegmatite claims, 3) purchase the most recent geologic map of the area and hope there are pegmatites labeled on the map, 4) search the local universities and see if someone has done a thesis on the geology of the area or 5) check the county courthouse for old pegmatite claims.
