PostPosted: Jun 11, 2014 04:03    Post subject: My jasper is really starting to "pop"!

For a while my focus had shifted from jasper/chalcedony to quartz and zeolites... but a couple weeks ago I was walking around on my land, and in an area I didn't expect to find *anything* (no bedrock visible, not down in the river canyon), I came across my best jasper find to date, just sitting out in the open. Massive icelandic poppy jasper! :)

Here's some micro/macro photos of one of the pieces. I have a bunch of smaller pieces, plus about three or so more pieces of the same size, plus their "big brother" who's currently washing up in an acid bath to get the gunk off the outside. It's got everything - color variation, transparency variation, orbicular patterning, botryoidal surfaces, the works :)

The "big brother" of the photographed piece, in its acid bath. Weighs several kilos.

Good finds of jasper Rei. Those are nice big chunky pieces. I guess the 'orbs' (spots) are due to an acicular mineral, probably a zeolite, being dissolved in-situ while the chalcedony/jasper was being deposited in the (vein?) cavity. Pretty though :-)
