PostPosted: Jan 31, 2019 15:13    Post subject: Pseudomorph Process Stories

My name is Raymond Straw.
I plan to present an amateur paper on Pseudomorph Stories at the next Rochester Mineral Symposium.
The progress from the original mineral to a pseudomorph or epimorph is not readily available as I will show in my paper.
I would like help in filling some of the gaps (hopefully from FMF members) and a place to store the stories in mostly picture form.
I am sure that the progress on any one pseudomorph or epimorph will be continually changing.
Could you call me or email me to discuss where this information could be stored on the internet and made easily available to mineral collectors (preferably on an existing site such as FMF)?
Thank you for considering my request.

I presume you have seen or have the 'Photo Atlas of Mineral Pseudomorphism' by Kloprogge [Elsevier]. It fails on many accounts - especially the photo section, but has some analysis of certain aspects of the chemistry of some pseudomorphs. In my collection I have a lot of pseudomorphs and find them especially interesting - a mineral that changed into another - and sometimes changed more than once. Some are easy to understand - others almost impossible for me to imagine [and I have a strong background in geology and chemistry].....yet there they are.

Thanks for the quick response.

I have had that book for over a year and there are lots of great pictures.

Every week I find new specimens that help show the progress from original mineral to the new mineral. So my understanding of a given transformation changes frequently.

I would like to share this information including pictures submitted by other collectors to provide an up to date information source. A given book or article only shows a portion of what might be available and is not generally updated.

That's why I'm looking for an an Internet site that can store this information and be updated with new information.

Best regards,
Ray Straw

Hi Ray,

Why not load some photos to www.mindat.org

I second this motion. It is an appropriate place with the right kind of viewers to give you photos and information. You could also post similar on a dedicated website, but the traffic will be low for a long time, I think.

Sorry for the delay, but I just landed in Tucson and the arrival is always overwhelming.

As suggested to you Mindat is a good place where to share your images but I believe that FMF is not bad at all neither. Why not to do it in both sites?

If you wish to do it please publish it in our VIP section: Featured Columns of FMF

Please rememeber that we already have a lot of info of this topic here: Endomorph or Pseudomorph? (and in some other threads...)

With regard to Ray's original question, I am fascinated by "inside-out" pseudomorphs that are replaced in the center of the crystal, but with some of the relict original mineral remaining in the outer zones. One sees this in some of the famous native copper pseudomorphs after aragonite from Corocoro, Bolivia: still aragonite on the outside but (as demonstrated by the density and an electronic metal detector) native copper on the inside.
