Not a mineral, but a rock (assemblage of minerals).
I agree with SteveB that this a piece of schist (metamorphic rock)

There are many types of Schist, the correct type I can’t offer further help with. It's also a very common rock and often found as decoration in gardens, so it may have been where you found it by man made means or natural. If there is more at the location and it's untouched land (ie never graded for roads or construction.etc) then it could be a natural occurence, and then if you research the location on Mindat maybe you can find out the types of schist that naturally occur there. That would get you closer to a more detailed identification. If its abundant there’s a good chance someone has a quarry to mine it. You could always visit them and learn more about the rock.

I'm glad I found this forum. I also dug out a rock like this while prospecting. It looked interesting but I just didn't know what it was so I just kept in my garage. Now I know what it is. Thanks!
