Prolific writer about minerals Berthold Ottens has just produced a new and quite comprehensive 550-page book about the minerals of China: China: Mineralien – Fundstellen – Lagerstaetten. Unfortunately for those of us who do not read German, the text is in German only. We can hope that an English edition will follow. The book was published by Christian Weise Verlag and costs a mere 59 Euros.

We were leant a copy and have been enjoying it greatly. Delighted to find at least four of our minerals in it which was a surprise to us.
I really love the photography and the Erica Pohl section!

I wrote a note to the fellow who has the cover shot on the book, he was very surprised and pleased. I do hope it comes out in English also, but will order one in German and practice my language skills...it's been a while since I took German!

Hi all,
got my copy few days ago .. was very keen on it as i have some chinese in my collection and the infos about the localities are great, Ottens is a connoisseur of chinese minerals without doubt. BUT: i am a bit disappointed about the quality of the photos. Most are good/ok but there are a lot of pictures which are blurry and sometimes the colours seem to be far from being natural. In comparison to the last large mineral book i got (Namibia) the pictures are not as good as i expected from a 59 Euro compendium.

Just my personal impression, i´d like to know if other readers think the same.

Nevertheless it is a must have ... and i am glad to have it.

Cheers
Roger

Great book on Chinese Minerals.
While writen in German it fully complements other publications such as the two Min Record issues devoted to China and the other recent book Fine Minerals of China,

This particular book however is more detailed in its treatment of locality information.
It appears to be getting harder to obtain so I suggest to those collectors of Chinese minerals who do not have this text to get one ASAP.

We don't know if there will be an Enhlish version but that would be nice - especially if they could add other info or different pictures (bit like the two Tsumeb books by George Gebardt - English and German)

Great book

Cheers

I bought one copy at the last Mineralientage München directly from Berthold Ottens, who is really a nice and friendly guy to talk with, and had him sign the book for me.

It's excellent, a must-have for every Chinese minerals collector although, as Roger says above, some photos are not as good as expected.

An English translation is not going to be available any time soon. Berthold told me that some sponsoring is needed and he can't count on it for the moment. So in the meantime you'd better purchase the German version. With a good knowledge of English, and knowing what the book is talking about, plus a bit of imagination one can easily understand somewhere between 30% and 40% of the text. If not, buy also a dictionary and take an aspirin.
