PostPosted: Nov 28, 2010 18:30    Post subject: New Aquamarine Beryl Locality

I found a new site for Aquamarine Beryl in BC Canada. I had been prospecting the pegmatites in this one mountain range in BC Canada for the past five years, and I have been finding boulders of rose quartz and hundreds of pegmatites containing black tourmaline. This past summer, I found a large pegmatite of 30 metres by 100 metres that contained black (schorl) tourmalines up to 40 cm. I also found green aquamarines and yellow heliodor beryls frozen in situ in the Pegmatite. Doing some digging at the dirt at the base of the pegmatite I started finding large beryl crystals, with the largest one being approx 25 cm long and 8 cm wide. The crystal has good form and some gemmy areas. The site is located at 7000 feet elevation so the freeze thaw process has damaged most surface crystals. The snow free season is from august 1st to sept 30th weather permitting so I hope next season I can dig deeper and find unweatherd crystals. I am excited about the potential this site holds and I am so happy I have it claimed :) Hammering on the pegmatite I found some cavities with simple rough quartz crystals, so I am excited about the potential for pocket beryls or maybe even colored tourmalines, one can only hop :) enjoy, more to come next season.

Fascinating report ! There is no thrill greater than prospecting new and previously unknown mineral localities. It reminds me of my own prospecting in the mountains of Scandinavia and Greenland. Good luck when the snow melts - and keep us posted.

That is sweet! All the signs and indicators are there. Can you get blasting charges up there? Did you file a claim yet? Any old logging roads to get a backhoe there? The vuggy areas are a good sign. Nothing worse than getting a complex peg that never had gas pockets. Just like the Hogg in Georgia, USA..lots of great rose, lots of beryl crystals with gemmy areas of all sizes, but no pockets(collapsed since decomposed). sigh. Well done! Keep us informed. I still think Canada(and siberia) has the most potential ,for new/gem minerals, of just about anywhere. It's so dang big and digging season is so short.

Nice job Herb! I started out my own interest in pegmatites as a child finding muscovite, quartz and feldspar crystal lined pockets, beryl and tourmaline, then columbite, plumbomikrolite, milarite and on..... WIsh you luck in finding a nice pocket. ONly by hard work something comes up. Best regards Peter

Thanks. Yes I claimed the site and I am happy about that. It is a 12 km hike from the highway so any equipment I bring up there will have to be heli lifted in. I am looking into getting a drill up. There are some micro blasters but only time will tell. For now I am just excited to get back up there with a shovel and hammer. I only scratched the surface so there could be lots of beryls sitting in the dirt at the base of the pegmatite. I cant wait for next year, thanks
