Hi all, I open this thread to show you a little sample about mining kits I've made using plastic pieces from old toys I had at home.
As long as I think there isn't anything like these on line, I hope you like the work I'm going to show in this and next posts.
Greetings and enjoy!

This headframe is inspirated in one who exists in the School of Mining Engineering at Cartagena (Murcia, Spain). This old headframe was made of wood and gave its service at one of the many lead-zinc mines in the Cartagena-La Unión range. |

Wow, a mineral collector that builds with LEGO. Thought I was the only one out there in the world. Although I really do not really build, but provide a service for real builders. I do make labels for specimens out of LEGO parts, though.

Really I use old Lego pieces, a chinese copy of Lego whose pieces fit with Lego (more cheaper) and some made with a Spanish construction toy called Tente, like these I show next...

Hi Joaquin, how cool ist that!?! I always used to be a fanatic LEGO builder as a child, even today i'm still fascinated by that stuff. But what a great idea to create models of mining buildings out of LEGO - it combines two wonderful hobbies ;-)
Btw: Do you know which German coal mine it was that inspired you to build that model?
Cheers!

Hi Tobias,
I tell you that the real model of that mine is a general idea after I saw some pics of German coal mines (I suppose along the Ruhr region), so that kit is a combination of buildings, headframe and chimneys only in a "German style".
See now an "English style" in the next mine I show...

A variation on these would make good kits for mining museum gift shops. Very nice. But a bit of blasphemy to use non-LEGO pieces. Kind of like lab grown crystals. You might want to check out Bricklink dot com --a good place to buy new LEGO by the piece needed. There are lots of European stores on it that sell LEGO(tm) elements. Chinese minerals are nice, but Chinese knockoffs of LEGO are just that --knockoffs . Stick with the original.

How long does it take from getting an idea until a new model is built?

If I have time to do...no more than one day.
I've built some models in a couple of hours (I take more time looking for the pieces in the box)...others a complete day. I don't remember have spent more time.
Cheers Tobias

Here you have an exceptionnel hand made model, no other like this in the world. It was made by an ex-miner from La Unión (Spain) using metal and wood.
An authentic copy of the real "San José Mine", what existed at the Cartagena-La Unión range.
I paid $150 for it in 1998, a cheap amount due the good work and details in this mine.
Hope you like...
