A petrographic thin-section of a nephiline-melilite basalt from the Honolulu volcanic series on Oahu. Collected from a quarry near the Manoa campus of the University of Hawaii.

Nice to see that even Hawaii has some interesting minerals to offer! As a collector who likes U.S. minerals there are many U.S. states that come to mind when speaking of minerals, e.g. Colorado, Arizona, California, Missouri or Illinois, but Hawaii definitely not among them ;-) So thanks to all here who show us that also those beautiful islands in the Pacific Ocean feature some mineralogical treasures!

In my quest to obtain calcites from every U.S. state, I was thrilled to stumble across one from Hawaii as one of my first specimens.
