I have a double terminating, octahedronal epidote.
I want to know the value, or an estimation.

This is the bottom, the risidual white powder is from some kind of calcium based mineral which he found it in. He said he dissolved the host mineral with acid, and was left with this

It looks like a truncated crystal with a well developed, typical termination on top and contacted on the bottom.
As for value, that is not the purpose of this forum. Mindat has a moneygrubber's forum if you want info on value.

I would never sell it, my grandfather left it to me in a collection. I just wondered if it was anything special.

Its one of thousands of single crystals that can and have been dug from a mine near Salida, CO. The mines name is the Calumet or Calumet Iron Mine. The crystal you have is special because someone took the time and effort to bring it to light and you hold it in high esteem for its sentimental attributes.

Hi,
maybe you should have posed your question differently as most people here are not eager to evaluate specimens which will be sold after that evaluation citing us to a more or less extent ;-). IMO this is a quite nice epidote with a fine termination. Keep it and appreciate the value that your grandpa seemingly atrributed to this specimen. In terms of commercial value you may be disappointed as there are lots of better specimens in the collectors world of course.
Nice one though.
Cheers
Roger
