Louisiana the "Bayou State"

Theorically Louisiana is poor in minerals. Pete Richards proves the oposite with these excellent photographs.
Thanks Pete!

Surface texture probably reflects complex twinning by structural inversion as it cooled.

If I have the story approximately right, Venice is located on a salt dome somewhat out in the Gulf of Mexico at the end of the Mississippi River. They pumped water down into the dome to recover brine for making salt (again). Fred Pough visited the area, perhaps in the 1950's, and took samples of insoluble minerals that were flushed up into the brine ponds with the brine. In one locality, or perhaps more, he collected bags full of these small crystals of chambersite and boracite. I was fortunate to acquire a couple of dozen crystals of chambersite and a half dozen boracite crystals.

Interesting how something that at one point in time and space was probably available by the kilograms and tens of millions of individuals now is an uncommon micromineral from that find!

Well, those are truly spectacular! I was curious as to what would be posted when Louisiana came up - thanks for the lesson!

According to Skip Simmons and Al Falster at U. New Orleans, it was Fred Pough, but the year was 1969. Apparently a hurricane later wiped out the locality.

Jeff Scovil comes again to our aid and he supplied one of his fine images for Louisiana

Thank you Jeff!

The chambersite crystals in my photo were the ones that Fred Pough collected. I shot them at his house in 1995 on that terrible background at his request.
