PostPosted: Aug 23, 2012 05:50    Post subject: Differences between quartzite and segregation quartz

Hi. Recently I have collected some quartzite rock specimen, but I wonder if they are real quartzite or just segregation quartz clasts. Do you know some differences between them? The following pictures include some observations I think may be useful. Cany you add another criteria, or correct mine if necessary? After your opinions I will put the right specimens in FMF Guide of Metamorphic Rocks. Thanks.

In the center of the picture you can see nearly rounded grey dots. I suppose they are old sandstone grains now incorporated to the recrystallized rock. Segregation quartzs would not have these grains.

Another example, the same remark.

Segregation quartzs are not supposed to bear aligned mica or phyllosilicates because it was segregated and separated from them.

Ordered-by-size grains usually reveal a clastic-sedimentary origin. Segregation quartzs shouldn't show this configuration.
