My main interests are Quartz, Calcite and fluorite but I also have a soft spot for New Zealand minerals and will make a point of including these in this thread. Mineral photography for me is a source of constant joy and frustration, I hope you enjoy them :)

I like the way your backgrounds grade from light to dark. It makes the minerals seem to float in air. Fine presentation.

Thanks Mark, so much trial and error (more error :) ) in getting these photos, I use a suspended sheet of glass to get that effect.

Sounds interesting to me! New Zealand is a country with rather few minerals on the market, at least here in Europe. I love that beautiful country and appreciate it very much to see a collector who shows some specimens from NZ. Keep it up :-)

Yes, we do! I agree with Mark: Your backgrounds are really good!
Cheers!

I thought that might be the case with the glass as a very slight reflection was visible but I like it and may try the idea though my camera and skills are not close to yours.

Hi Tobi,
you wont see much as sadly the variety of minerals from NZ which make good display specimens is small and the amount of material which comes from the deposits is also very small. Most of my NZ collection is quartz, I will post some in the coming weeks.

Seems to me that New Zealand has a shortage of rockhounds! Surely there are good mineral specimens to be found in those mountains. Greg, is mineral collecting a popular hobby in NZ? Are there many or few clubs or societies dedicated to this pursuit? I have no idea myself. Would love to travel there sometime and go a-hunting - though it is so very far away...
Keep up the good work Greg; we all would love to see more photographs!
Regards, Mike

I have had similar thoughts Mike. Surely those mountains must have some amazing specimens. I cannot wait to see some quartz specimens Greg!

Sadly our hobby in New Zealand is in decline. There are less than a dozen 'active' clubs and a large focus of them is lapidary. This may be due to the fact that there is a reasonable amount of lapidary material which can be collected here, jasper , agate, petrified wood etc.
Our mountains while beautiful are not vast treasure troves of crystals and most of the material which we collect is from the Coromandel gold mining area. Our mining industry focuses on things like gold, coal, oil and gas, iron sands etc. Deposits of things like copper, lead, zinc etc are few and far between.
Thanks for your comments, will get onto some more photos soon,
Greg

Hi Greg,
Nice pictures. I love your cerussite specimens from Tui Mine and the calcite from Zeehan Mine. They are so interesting.
Thanks and regards,

Thank you for the comments. The calcite from the Zeehan was recovered from tailings stacked outside the mine, now washed away in floods.
Some more NZ minerals...
