A not to well known Cornish classic

1-Vivianite Owles 1.JPG
 Description:
Vivianite
Wheal Owles, Botallack, St. Just, Cornwall, Englan, UK
Group of radiating vivianite crystals, 7mm across, in jasper. Ex Henry Ludlam (1822-1880) and Geological Museum, London, collections. The Ludlam collection was once on display in the Geological Museum, one of very few old extant collections still held in one piece and available to be seen. Now sadly incorporated into the Natural History Museum Collection and no longer on display.

Group of 1cm bertrandite crystals with quartz and chlorite. Ex Richard Barstow collection, exceptional for the UK.

Collected in 1978. I was collecting with Dick when we got this and lost the toss to decide which of us was going to have it! Dick Barstow died tragically young, there are a lot of memories in this rock.

A great specimen, Ian. Association of minerals with history and people adds hugely to their interest and this is a particularly resonant example.

I love specimens with some history Ru, it doesn't necessarily make them better, but it does make them more interesting. This is a Talling chalcotrichite that I traded with the BM London. I have since trimmed some of the quartz matrix away

A much travelled cassiterite

1-Cassiterite Breage 1.JPG
 Description:
Cassiterite
Great Work Mine, Breage, Cornwall, England, UK.
largest crystal 6mm.
This Cornish cassiterite was once in the Freiberg mining Academy in Saxony, Germany (its label dates it there to between 1880-1905). From Freiberg it made its way to Chile's national Museum, the Museo de Santiago.

Rescued by Skip Szenics in the late 1900s, he brought it back to New York in the USA. In 2002, he brought it down to Tucson, from whence I repatriated it back to the UK.

This is a well-travelled tin!

Located only as Cornwall on the Freiberg label, this specimen has been compared to others in the Natural History Museum Collection in London. Its matrix and composition matches those in the Russell Collection from Great Work Mine in Breage.

£1 10s in 1864 money seems like a healthy price for that chalcotrichite. Using one of the online calculators to convert to 2013 money I got:

£115.00 using the retail price index

£891.00 using average earnings

Bournonite from the original but much less well-known locality of Wheal Boys in the parish of St Endellion in Cornwall where it was associated with jamesonite, sphalerite and siderite.

First mentioned by Philip Rashleigh in 1797, it was more fully described by French crystallographer and mineralogist Jacques Louis, Comte de Bournon in 1804, after whom it was subsequently named. However, the name given by Bournon himself in 1813 was endellionite, after St Endellion, the original location.

Whilst Whs Gorland and Unity are best known for their superb and rare arsenates and phosphates, they also produced many other fine minerals. One, never common and much sought after by collectors of Cornish minerals, is mimetite.
