Don,

I echo Jamison's comment about the Red Embers Mine almandine specimen. Very neat piece. I'm not familiar with the locality - is it a relatively new piece?

Michael

Michael,

From what information I have, these dark Almandine crystals are found in blades of metallic gray graphite schist. It is new material from the Red Embers Mine in Erving, Franklin County, Massachusetts and introduced at the East Coast Gem and Mineral Show in Springfield, Massachusetts last month. The miners spent 5 years mining and preparing the specimens (sandblasting and isolating the crystals so that light would shine through). It takes a couple of hours to prepare each specimen. The mine was originally called the Sky Farm, then renamed the Two Fat Boys Claim and now being mined by the family team of Jason, Kevin and Kyle Baskin.

Regards,

Don

Thanks for the info. As a native of Massachusetts, I'll have to keep my eyes open for these in Denver.
