The map of fluorite locations shows only the major producers of 'museum' type specimens. I've personally collected well-crystallized fluorites from 37 distinct locations in Weardale, 21 in Teesdale and many more from surrounding areas. This is probably a serious underestimate as I only recently started making a catalogue. Many people will argue that there's nothing left to collect nowadays but it's still possible to find good examples if you know where to look and what to look for. The mantra of the real estate business might be 'location, location, location' but for field collectors it should be 'research, research, research'

Yeah, that map was just a hint of some of the mines. I think in one area alone there are 100+ known locations. I cant think where off the top of my head, Alston block I think? Sadly, I've never been to any locations personally and just collecting from afar and only just getting into the whole area so steep learning curve ahead.

Glassy, pale yellow fluorite crystals to 1.2cm on matrix. They have a faint blue area just below the surface.

Jason, just to clear up any confusion the fluorite is from workings accessed via the High or Firestone level of Skears mine. It worked the same set of veins as the low level and they are collectively known locally simply as Skears mine to distinguish them from High Skears which is a completely separate mine. I think Ray Fairbairn in his book refers to it as Low Skears mine but I used to live in the area and knew a few of the old miners who always called it just Skears.

My fault Colin. Jason wrote properly "Skears" but as this was unclear for me I assigned "Low Skears Mine"

It is already fixed currently. Thanks for the warning.

I can only agree with Jamison who

I really enjoy looking through your Weardale, England fluorites. A lot of these individual mines, I haven’t heard of so it is a treat to get to see some of the more obscure locales.

Though I'm interested in Weardale fluorites, I also know only the well-known mines like Rogerley, West Pasture, Boltsburn, Frazer's Hush, Blackdene, Heights, Hilton or Rotherhope Fell. Thank you for showing examples from that whole area!

Thanks for that Colin, i've only got the symes and young book and just ordered the Pasto book though that is a general Fluorite book rather than a UK one(i believe), thats why i always use your descriptions as i trust them and the veins and levels are all new to me

I'm slowly collecting from a wide range of mines, though i'm sure some will be impossible to get samples from these days

Black Sphalerite and Quartz

Glassy purple fluorite crystals on galena matrix. They have a sprinkling of small quartz across them and finally a part covering of calcite

Small but very gemmy purple fluorite crystals on limestone matrix. They have a darker zone round the edges, giving a 'window pane' effect.

Small crystals of deep blue sapphire richly scattered through matrix

So: "Dale Mine foot workings, Mallerstang, North Pennines, Westmorland, Cumbria, England, United Kingdom"?
are you sure this is correct?
Also, please in the captions use the weight as "grams" better than "g" and please locate it in the "File Comment" field, not in the "Dimensions (cm or mm)" field. Thank you.
