Michael, that red quartz is such a wonderful specimen, congratulations! As a quartz collector, I really envy you for having such a beauty :-)

And, Pierre:

I immediately thought, 'what a nice Orange river red quartz' . I did not even know you get these in Morocco! Very nice!

I thought EXACTLY the same, both that it comes from Orange River and that I have never seen such a thing before from Morocco ... well, and of course I also thought it was very nice :-)

Thank you Pierre and Tobi. These red quartz specimens from Morocco were new at Tucson. There were quite a few of them, so no doubt you will see them at future shows. I do not have an Orange River quartz for comparison, but they do look somewhat similar. The cores of the Moroccan crystals (at least in my specimen) are colorless and transparent. These crystals then were overgrown with a second generation of quartz with uniform inclusions of iron oxide.

It's great to see how Morocco always surprises with great new finds, especially quartz specimens. The last really great new find of quartz that I remember were the stunning combinations of quartz with azurite, malachite and red iron ore from Mecissi. But when you say that these red ones were new in Tucson, I don't wonder why I haven't heard of them before ...

Great stuff!

Hi Michael, you say that: 'These crystals then were overgrown with a second generation of quartz with uniform inclusions of iron oxide'. As far as I know, the Orange river reds are first generation quartz with a coating of hematite and finaly a second generation overgrowth of clear quartz. If the final growth is more than a thin film, it is a phantom quartz. I would love to have one of these Moroccan reds to study it. Best regards.

Some of Ross Lillie's collection from the southern Illinois fluorspar district has filtered down through several dealers and Jared Freiburg from SAGA minerals had about 2 dozen flats of this material at Tucson. I enjoyed looking through these and reading Ross' detailed comments concerning the date collected, mine level, paragenesis, etc. I ended up selecting a half dozen pieces which were somewhat unique and represented 3 different mines. I'll start of with a delicate celestite fan from the Minerva Mine.

 Locality:
Minerva I Mine, Ozark-Mahoning group, Cave-in-Rock Sub-District, Hardin County, Illinois, USA
 Dimensions: 3.1 x 8.2 cm

 Mineral: Calcite
 Locality:
Rosiclare, Rosiclare Sub-District, Hardin County, Illinois, USA
 Dimensions: 7.1 x 8.0 cm
 Description:
An unusual calcite consisting of flattened scalenohedral crystals aligned in a parallel orientation with cream colored barite and a druse of tiny purple fluorites. This piece fluoresces orange under SW UV, and according to Ross' notes, this was indicative of the vein type deposits in the Rosiclare District.

Here are a few new fluorite pieces in the collection. Locality details on the last two pieces are sketchy, but I'm confident that more specific information will eventually be revealed. The 2nd piece was reportedly found during construction of a high-speed railroad tunnel in 2014, but the language barrier prevented me from finding out much more about the location.

Thanks Carles and Don. I was especially pleased to find the twinned galena as it is my favorite mineral.

Michael,

the galenite from the Fletcher Mine is very aesthetic in my eyes.

Thank you for your comments Martin and Bob. BTW Bob, that quartz was purchased this year in Tucson for under $10, which goes to show that if you are willing to work hard, there are still bargains to be had.
