I was thinking the same thing. Never saw a smithsonite that looked anything like that

Yes, they can. Uncommon but Smithsonite ;-)

Regarding the habit of smithsonite noted above. This is a classic Tsumeb habit. I have a friend with a specimen holding crystals over 10cm long. Stunning piece. In my large Tsumeb smithsonite collection I had a number of smaller examples of this habit. The piece in question is a great rock. The color is striking and unusual.
