Hi,
Two other SEM pics of epitaxy of hematite on rutile, from Niveligsberg (Eifel).
Take a look at the general site of our club.

Is it, or isn't it? I thought it quite interesting, at any rate. If not, what does one call it?

The second generation crystals appear to have cube faces in their middles, where they should be if this generation is oriented parallel to the previous one. This could be referred to as "autoepitaxy" or "homoepitaxy" (they mean the same thing), or less technically as an oriented overgrowth or simply an overgrowth.

Octahedral fluorite seems to be prone to overgrowths on the corners. I know of examples from at least three other localities.

The other faces on the second growth are dodecahedral. These are cube-dodecahedral crystals on the octahedron tips. A lovely specimen. Several years ago I got a specimen from there with simple cubes on the tips.

I've collected for epitaxy, and here are a few, beginning with another albite on microcline from New Mexico. This one has albite crystals above in different orientation from those below. That is because they are on two sides of an underlying Carlsbad twin.
