PIERRE, Really nice quartz crystals. I am sure they will clean up just fine!

Not sure about JOAN M B's calling them a "geode"???

Geodes are a specific rock structure containing one or several minerals; do these quartz crystals have anything to do with geodes where they are collected? BOB

I always believed that the only difference between a pocket of crystals and a geode, is the matrix. You are a geode expert, so please correct me if I'm wrong.

Bob

It is all down to false friends!

The Spanish word 'geoda' means both 'geode' and 'pocket' in English. So they are false friends and JMB's use comes from that.

When translating from Spanish into English, or vice versa, you have to read into the context to decide whether to translate 'geoda' as 'geode' or 'pocket'

Pierre, Over time you have shown a lot of your interesting and productive trips finding quartz xx. While I'm not asking you to tell exactly where any of these locations are, you seem to have found either one general [or perhaps specific] area with lots of potential for quartz xx - or there is an entire larger area you explore where there seem to be multiple potentials for finding quartz xx. How near or far from one another are these various trips you have taken, if I may ask? It reminds me of an area I often go to when I'm back in Colorado. It is several Km x several Km and while some areas are better than others, almost anywhere on digs one has the real possibility of pockets filled with quartz, nice feldspar and sometimes topaz and more exotic xx.

Pierre and James,

Thank you for clarifying the differing definitions of "geode" in English and other languages. I learn something new every day and will keep that difference in mind as I read posts. Bob

Hi Peter, I find your question very interesting and I will attempt to answer it as best I can. The area where I collect varies from 1 km from our house to about 250 km away. The areas close to home are not as rich in crystals as the other areas and good pockets are seldom found. There is quite a variety though. The other areas are much further. Some of these have massive quartz outcrops stretching for as many as 10 km and crystals can be found anywhere along them. Good pockets are not easy to find though. I often return with just a hand full of small crystals.
Some areas are very difficult to reach. I discovered small caves full of crystals but I cannot get into them:-( I also discovered places which are so far out that I can only bring a few kg specimens down. As I mentioned before, I hardly ever meet anyone looking for crystals in the Western Cape mountains.

This past week, I took our dog and walked twice, many km in the mountains directly bordering our town, looking at any possible place that may yield a new find. I am posting a picture to show what I had found after all my trouble. Finding a nice pocket in our direct area is very difficult but can also be very rewarding.

Riana and I visited the area where I recently found a nice pocket. We did not find much but saw a large cobra, a buck, an eagle and some interesting field mice. We did manage to capture a beautiful sunset on our walk back to the car.

About an hour ago, Riana took a few pictures of me and our dog to show a friend. Can you remember our dog that we found on a crystal outing???? :-) She is now a well trained, stunning dog.

Thank you Heimo! There where times when we wanted to get rid of the dog as she had a few very destructive habits, including killing doves and small animals. I put a lot of energy into training her and she is doing very well at the moment.
