Matt:

The morphology of the pyrite from the Nanisivik mine was well described by Bob Gait, et al. in the Mineralogical Record, vol. 21, p.515, 1990.

Matt,
You have good taste in minerals, and good tasting Belgian ale.

John - excellent article. What do you think, are the faces on the corners trapezohedral and the faces along the edges pyritohedral?

Also, the tortured specimen appears to be similar to figures 32, 33, and 38 (epitaxial pyrite on pyritized marcasite), with maybe some features like figure 36 (iron cross twin). What do you think?

Matt:

There seems no doubt that the corners are trapezohedral, but I am unwilling to speculate on the other forms from the photos.

I don't have any good way of measuring crystallographic angles, so i guess all i can know for now is that the faces are {1n0} where n is 2 or larger.

Thanks.

This is a Vanadinite I got from Lavinsky about a month ago. These are from the recent find of big lusterous cogwheel xtals. Lavinsky lists them only as being from "near Mibladen." The specimen is 16.4 x 8.6 x 6.1 cm. Pictures are from Rob, I have yet to photograph it myself.

I believe that this specimen is from the ACF Shaft, Mibladen, Midelt, Morocco.
In January of this year some world class specimens, different from this one, came out from there, blood red color and with Baryte. I believe that they will be visible in the Munich Show.

Thanks Jordi. The matrix of this specimen is pink and looks like a felsic volcanic. Is this matrix common or possible for ACF vanadinites?

The matrix for the Mibladen's Vanadinite is or Baryte or a kind of compacted clay.

I was experimenting today trying to show clarity in an elmwood calcite. Putting the specimen on a piece of white paper with simple black text seemed to work ok. This composition also shows the glassy luster as reflections of the text.
