Time passes and often not so slowly...
I created FMF in 2006 and on August 7, 2021, it will reach 15 years of talking about minerals and more minerals, seasoned with a good pinch of Science.
A few months ago I explained in the Spanish side that after so many years of hard work, the time had come to make room for a new generations and it has been done with great success, the administrators are doing it wonderfully.
All very nice, but who will pay for this? So far it has been me, but I can't continue paying for it for a lifetime either, mostly because what FMF costs is significant since you have to pay not only for storage but also IT, FMF is technologically complex and needs a lot of good maintenance / improvements to be able to remain what it is.
After doing major negotiations with the administrators of FMF Spanish to try to resolve this issue, FMF has now found a sponsor that will suit it well: me 😉
As of tomorrow, which will be when I turn 64, this Forum will have as its sole sponsor the company Fabre Minerals, which will fully pay the annual cost of the Forum and in return will put its advertising banner at the bottom of the pages.
So, from tomorrow there will be a small change in the appearance of FMF and it will have a banner. |

Jordi,
Congratulations and thank you for your loyalty, down to the smallest detail.
Never seen.
Your role, even supported by your firm, is a hope for the continuity of amateur mineralogy and ultimately for the development of an intelligent hobby.
Good luck,
Roger. |

Thank you, Jordi, for creating and sponsoring the Forum! It has always been a source of much information and interesting reading (and viewing), and your past work, and the new sponsorship, are all very much appreciated! |

Thanks to everybody!
Further down the pages you can now see the new banner. The author is José Luis Bravo a wonderful person and great artist who also created the FMF banner at the top of the pages. Thanks José Luis. |

In Pronto 15 años de FMF y como hacer que sean muchos más - Financión futura? Jordi Fabre wrote: |
We need to find a way to keep FMF running as it is a great resource we do not want to lose. As you might guess we (Jordi and the admin team) have been working for about two years trying to work out how to keep this going.
We have approached many organisations, both Spanish (for the Spanish side) and International (for the English side) and have thought about how to finance FMF. We hope some of these will soon bear fruit and we will have a better understanding of the future of FMF, but clearly finance is the most difficult.
We have given a lot of thought to that, but it is not easy to solve as keeping this forum alive costs about €10,000/year (hosting, IT support team, anti-spam, etc.) and that is not an easy hole for us to fill. Small amounts, no matter how well-intentioned, do not really help. We have taken the bridging step of asking Jordi to sponsored the forum, but this is not a long term solution. The admin team and forum members need to find a long term solution, but at least we now have time to think and plan so as to resolve this.
Feel free to use this thread to debate, with no pressure, what we will do in the future. That said in a few years, if we do nothing, this forum will vanish or have to be frozen in its 'as is' state (which is easier than keeping it alive)
Until then we will keep working on improvements that we think will help the forum. The hand-curated database of localities will soon go public as will a pulldown list of minerals (just as you can already do with localities).
It has been a fun but busy 15 years and we have all enjoyed it, but the moment has arrived for this forum to use the solid base it has built as the runway for flying solo.

Jordi, I can only agree with all the others:
THANK YOU!
Thank you for creating, managing and fincancing this wonderful place where we all can share the one and only hobby :-)
Best regards
Tobi
P.S. The banner looks fabulous, but different than the usual fabreminerals website design, will this be your new layout? |
