Former collection of Joe McIntosh. The back of the old labe from Cities Service Oil Company says this:
Ref: Hall B #17 Bemis Pool
The 1500' of tubing below the workings barrel was found to be filled for the entire length with a crystalline deposit which on analysis is Gypsum with small traces of Sodium, Potassium, Halogens, Barium and Strontium. It is belived this deposit resulted from the commingling of some upper waters with the Atbuckle. The back of this piece is curved from where the drilling pipe went though it. Always keep the old labels with the piece.

The Galena runs up the whole backside of the Calcite twin.

| Those gypsum crystals were probably deposited within the oil well casing or drill pipe by flowing hot oil field water, and hence are not "natural" minerals. They can be beautiful none the less. I worked with Joe McIntosh at CSO in the early 70's. Great guy !

My husband, George, collected in the Tri-State area, especially at the Mid Continent mine in Treece, Kansas, in the late 1960s. He said the collecting was fabulous - crystals everywhere, and open cavities the size of a living room. On one trip, he used up 600 lbs. of newspaper and had to search for more to wrap minerals in - he was sending the crystals back home in 55 gallon barrels. The area is now closed to all collecting, and many of the head frames and old mineral shops are long gone.

A classic from the Tri-State lead/zinc orefield. When I was young I remember rock shops being full of this material. Probably not quite as nice as this one, however!

No, that is an exceptional specimen collected by Bob in 1969, and one I covet, heh, heh. And it's a nice size, too! Good addition to the collection, Jesse!

Jesse, you know I have a weakness for galena, so no wonder I love this specimen, this is so beautiful and impressive! We really should talk with Jordi about giving TEN thumbs up for one photo ;-)

Thanks, Tobi! Not quite a good Neudorf, but an aesthetic and classic specimen from a long-gone mining district. I felt fortunate to find it. Galena seems to get little respect among collectors in the face of all the bright shiny gem crystals and colorful secondary ore minerals, so it wasn't even very expensive.. Cheers!

Neudorf specimens may have another historic value and a more complex crystal form, but concerning the aesthetics your specimen is in my opinion on the same level - it's just perfect :-) And right, galena is not everybody's darling in the mineral collecting world, but there are many who like it a lot (Michael Shaw, you know I'm talking about you ;-))
