I really like that smoky quartz from Saline Valley. It has an alpine character, a spectacular shape and quality and seems to be very clear. A very choice quartz crystal from a locality that produced not many specimens, I guess?

Thanks Tobi! I am not sure on how productive this locality was/is. I have not seen many come to market over the years. The ones I have seen do have that alpine quality/look to them. This one is very clear and glassy.

A fascinating feature of that specimen is that there seem to be two different colours of the rhodo, some pink and some red. Any idea how this really different two colours on one specimen developed? Maybe two generations of MnCO₃ with different formation conditions? I don't know much about the chemistry of minerals but I once learned that the different colours of rhodochrosite depend on the temperature during growth and the composition of the elements and "impurities" (Mn, Fe, Ca, Mg). But such differences on one specimen are for sure something rare.
Very interesting piece, Mike, thanks for sharing!

I am not an expert in mineral chemistry or geology as well. Maybe since the crystals formed in two voids that each cavity had very different environments that lead to the two distinct colors/forms of rhodochrosite.
As a side note the chemical formula you used for rhodochrosite was flagged as spam. I had to replace it with the mineral name.

I have never seen specimens from Santa Clara del Cobre, although I have copper vessels from there (we visited the area in the 1970s and 80s)
