The location for the following specimen gets its name from Thomas Leiper (1745-1825), who owned several properties which were quarried for feldspar. Some of the buildings at nearby Swarthmore College used stone from the Leiper's Quarry.

Hello Michael, are you sure this is marcasite? I am not sure, but I think, I can see some octahedral faces like for pyrite (with high magnification). Nevertheless, a very nice piece!

Hi Volkmar,

At your suggestion of pyrite rather than marcasite, I just examined the specimen under the microscope. It turns out that both pyrite and marcasite are present. Thanks for your comment and good eye :>)

PostPosted: Jul 23, 2024 09:50    Post subject: Re: Collection of Michael Shaw

I spent a few hours yesterday reviewing photos of some of the older pieces in the collection. Some of the images, taken 20+ years ago, were really terrible. I selected some of the worst ones and re-photographed them. The following specimen is one of several pieces I did, and I don't think I ever posted a photo of it, so you won't have to look at the horrible original image.

I remember acquiring this piece 23 years ago at the Holiday Inn Show in Denver. A representative of the Fersman Museum was set up in a room on the second floor and I was really excited to be able to look over all of the specimens on display. At that time, fancy well-lit display cases were a rarity. For the most part, dealers layed flats of specimens on the beds and dresser tops, and tables. I miss those days. Anyhow, this ferberite was one of three pieces that I acquired that day (the other two were a Lorenzenite from the Kola Peninsula and a Cummingtonite from Ukraine).

It is always a great idea to repeat old specimen photos. You now have >20 years of experience.
