Hello Michael, are you sure this is marcasite? I am not sure, but I think, I can see some octahedral faces like for pyrite (with high magnification). Nevertheless, a very nice piece!

Hi Volkmar,
At your suggestion of pyrite rather than marcasite, I just examined the specimen under the microscope. It turns out that both pyrite and marcasite are present. Thanks for your comment and good eye :>)

I spent a few hours yesterday reviewing photos of some of the older pieces in the collection. Some of the images, taken 20+ years ago, were really terrible. I selected some of the worst ones and re-photographed them. The following specimen is one of several pieces I did, and I don't think I ever posted a photo of it, so you won't have to look at the horrible original image.
I remember acquiring this piece 23 years ago at the Holiday Inn Show in Denver. A representative of the Fersman Museum was set up in a room on the second floor and I was really excited to be able to look over all of the specimens on display. At that time, fancy well-lit display cases were a rarity. For the most part, dealers layed flats of specimens on the beds and dresser tops, and tables. I miss those days. Anyhow, this ferberite was one of three pieces that I acquired that day (the other two were a Lorenzenite from the Kola Peninsula and a Cummingtonite from Ukraine).

It is always a great idea to repeat old specimen photos. You now have >20 years of experience.

You know I did this several times and presented the results here. Carles did the same. And I liked these 2.0 photo sessions for two reasons: I could see my progress in photographing minerals and (sometimes) I got photos that did the specimens justice. So I can encourage you, Michael. Do some more reviews of specimens (if you have the time and the mood for it) and show these photos here. I think Carles and I are not the ony ones who would appreciate it :-)
Best regards
Tobi

Tobi,
Besides the benefits you mentioned, I have had the pleasure of seeing and holding several specimens that I haven't seen in quite a while, years actually). So, yes, I have started reviewing many of the early photos and re-doing some of them.
The preceding photo shows a piece I found in a box that had never been photographed and hadn't even been catalogued yet. Today's post features a specimen that I photographed yesterday. It can keep your wonderful Mt. Xuebaoding scheelite company :>) I acquired this piece 28 years ago, and Carles is right, specimens from this locality are getting harder and harder to find. So, congratulations on acquiring a fine scheelite.
Mineral: | Beryl (variety aquamarine) |
Locality: | Mount Xuebaoding, Pingwu, Mianyang Prefecture, Sichuan Province, China | |
|
Dimensions: | 4.8 x 3.5 x 2.0 cm |
Description: |
Glassy pale blue aquamarine crystals associated with bladed muscovite crystals. |

And sure, "meeting" some specimens again after years is without a doubt another reason to start a new photo session :-)

A nice beryl/aqua from Xuebaoding like yours is also something I would like to have in my collection. I once had one but sold it because it didn't meet my criteria anymore. I'm glad for you that you could get one some time ago when prices were not as insane as today. Your beryl deserves a place outside the box! ;-)
