Posted: Oct 03, 2024 13:48 Post subject: Collection of Carles Millan: Native bismuth
Bismuth Bi, Quartz SiO2, Bismuthinite Bi2S3
Description: Laminar bright native bismuth on a matrix of quartz with some bismuthinite. Although it does not have idiomorphic crystals, it shows the polysynthetic parallel growth typical for natural bismuth, which forms a kind of feather. That mine has been closed for more than 60 years now, since there is no ore left. Specimen purchased in 1966 from Francesc Coma Molist (Scheelita-Daco), former curator of the Folch collection, for just €0.36.
Dimensions: 59 mm x 34 mm.
Mass: 61 g.
Locality: Dolores Mine, Dolores Mining Group, Las Lomas, Pozoblanco, Comarca Los Pedroches, Córdoba, Andalusia, Spain.
Unless otherwise noted, all photos are copyright by Carles Millan. Reproduction is allowed, if it is not too much to ask, as long as the author's name is cited and the image is not modified. Creative Commons Attribution Licence - Some Rights Reserved.
Description: A group consisting of two opaque, black quartz crystals with flawless edges is accompanied by a single prism of elbaite showing a dark green color with a light pink hue at the tip, as is usual in the area. There are some albite and hexagonal muscovite crystals scattered around, as seen. I think the black crystals of quartz might have been produced by human-induced irradiation.
Dimensions: 67 mm x 36 mm.
Largest crystal: 58 mm
Mass: 84 g.
Locality: Stak Nala, Haramosh Mts., Roundu District, Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan.

Description: A miniature formed by a group of green cuboctahedral crystals of fluorite, one of which is in good aerial position, with a well-marked color zoning of darker green shades, all of that accompanied by thin prismatic crystals of schorl. No damage.
Dimensions: 41 mm x 36 mm.
Largest crystal size: 16 mm
Mass: 32 g.
Locality: Erongo Mountains, Karibib Constituency, Erongo Region, Namibia.

This is so beautiful, Carles! Thanks for sharing these new images of a - in my opinion - perfect mineral specimen :-)

Tobi, thanks for your opinion. Not so beautiful; there are thousands of better rhodos out there from the Sweet Home Mine. I had the chance of purchasing it at a reasonable price in 2007 from the owners of the mine at a time when it was still open. After closing it, the prices have gone up and up, as usual.

Schorl NaFe2+3Al6(Si6O18)(BO3)3(OH)3(OH)
Description: A large, robust, well-formed schorl tourmaline crystal showing nine vertical faces (3+6), corresponding to the trigonal and hexagonal prisms, with the three typical triangular faces at the tips. Complete all around 360º, as can be seen in the video. The specimen is lustrous, jet-black, and has very faint to barely discernible vertical striations that are typical of tourmaline but are so poorly developed that they give the crystal a high luster. It is also unusual in that this doubly terminated crystal displays pyramidal terminations at each end. Ex-Alvaro Lucio collection.
Dimensions: 96 mm x 62 mm.
Largest crystal size: 96 mm.
Mass: 592 g.
Locality: Galiléia, Vale do Río Doce, Minas Gerais, Brazil.
