PostPosted: Dec 19, 2009 14:53    Post subject: Repairing Navajśn Pyrite

Recently my dog got over-excited about something and bolted into my living room.  He slammed into my cabinet, knocking over a Navajśn Pyrite. A cluster popped out of the matrix, luckilly sustaining no damage.

Could someone give me a recommendation as to what to use to re-secure it?  Thanks to an earlier topic I understand that these specemins sometimes need to be reassembled before they reach the market.  I wonder how this is done.

Thanks.

People working the mine and selling the specimens (I know them and I've been in their workshop) use a special epoxy resin glue like Araldite ( please see Wikipedia at http(:)//en.wikipedia(.)org/wiki/Araldite ) with really good results. If I were you I'd try with this.

Good luck!

Good evening

No idea as how actually they are repaired.
But I would guess that Elmer's glue would be a good possibility (to reattach a pyrite to the Navajśn matrix, I mean)

Hope it serves

With best wishes

Hi!

After carefully reading my notes, I've found that the adhesive most used for stabilize Navajśn pyrites now is the cyanoacrylate resin known as Loctite ( see Wikipedia at http(:)//en.wikipedia(.)org/wiki/Loctite ). People working and reassembling those specimens have a special formula made especially for them. But you may freely use any commercial Loctite to repair your pyrite. If applied properly, the specimen will be okay for very long, unless your dog knocks it again.

Thanks so very much for the quick and informed responces!

I'll try Locktite and look into dogproofing the case. Fortunately it's quite secure already but it took a big hit. - (Mastiff)
