Hello everybody, for the last 20 years or so I have been collecting minerals from the basalt lava flows of the Isle of Skye. Mostly these are zeolites, with some associated minerals such as calcite, apophyllite, prehnite, quartz.
I shall try to upload some photo's of these specimens - hope you like them.

Analcime crystals to 13 mm
Analcime crystals to 13mm + laumontite + 'mesolite'. Specimen is 9cm x 5cm high x 6cm deep. The analcime crystals are unusually clear for their size. Self-collected 1998 from a very remote locality on the Duirinish peninsula, Isle of Skye, named Inbhir a' Gharraidh on the map. |

Crystals to 19 mm x 8 mm
Apophyllite crystals to 19mm x 8mm, with fine, glassy pyramidal terminations. Interesting brownish zoning in the bottom half of the crystal. The backdrop is composed of many fresh small <2mm chabazite crystals. The specimen has been trimmed since this photo was taken - I'll try and do another sometime. Self-collected 2004 from Creag na Cuail, Duirinish, Isle of Skye. |

I'm still having trouble adding attachments, so I guess it's one at a time for photo uploads for the time being.
This next specimen of apophyllite was part of the previous specimen from Sgurr nam Boc when I collected it originally - one of the best days collecting I've ever had! The other thing is, this specimen was in two pieces and I glued it back together. The join is right down the middle of the specimen just left of the apophyllite crystal - which is undamaged. Question: does this make me a bad person or is it ok so long as I acknowledge the fact that a specimen is repaired?
I have a few specimens that I've repaired, but I try not to make a habit of doing it.

Hi Carles,
I'm having difficulty uploading images, especially if I try to add Attachments, in that I get knocked offlineafter a minute or two. If I post a single Attachment it seems I can do it - but not everytime. The first time I posted photo's I think I did four at once and I assumed that there would be no problems when I came to upload more; however this has not been the case.
Of course, it could be that my 10 year old vaio laptop which I never update is just not up to the job anymore! But I'll keep trying.

Please, before uploading try to decrease the picture size to a maximum of 600 pixels by using your image editor. It is usually not needed, I myself often upload several pictures with more than 3600 pixels and do not find any problem since the system is prepared to accept them. But in a few cases, when the internet connection is somewhat unstable or suffers of very short interruptions, some trouble can arise.
If the system fails or hangs, just click on the browser Back button to restore the data you had already uploaded and try again.

| Mike, just this morning I was re-reading John Sinkankas "Field Collecting Gemstones and Minerals" about repair-you're in good company. In a perfect world all specimens would come from the field in perfect condition. Alas, it is not the case and I use the smokey quartz and amazonite from Lake George, Colorado,USA, as an example. When these are sold, the label indicates the number of times the piece has been repaired -10X,20X and so on. I wonder what these would cost pristine. You're OK - I'm OK, just don't misrepresent the piece. Look's like great collecting, could you describe the the environment at the sites?

Hi vic,
thanks for your reassuring comments regarding the repair of mineral specimens; I shall carry on doing so when I feel the need but with a certain amount of discretion.
About the zeolite localities on the Isle of Skye:- For the past 20 years or so I have been exploring the west coast of the island which is largely composed of Tertiary flood basalt sea-cliffs up to 1000' high (300m). Some localities are relatively easy to get to, but many are very difficult to access. I'm a rock climber so I have an advantage! Extremely steep terrain, unstable huge cliffs and the tide would probably put off 99% of mineral collectors; then there's the traditional poor weather to contend with, and of course, midges.
The collecting is rewarding, but only if you can get there!
