Sure, gemminess is an important factor when judging the quality of certain minerals, if not THE factor when it's about gem minerals like beryl. From a jeweler's point of view, opaque specimens of emerald may seem worthless, but as a mineral collector, I think there are also wonderful specimens of that species that are opaque. When undamaged and in a nice shape, showing a vivid green colour, and combined with some contrasting matrix, an emerald doesn't need to be gemmy to look good. Gemminess is a bonus and increases the value enormously, but even opaque crystals can result in very desirable mineral specimens.

Just my humble opinion :-)
Tobi

Tobi, your humble opinion matters a lot to us :-) :-)

More seriously, I embraced this mindset from day 1 when I started collecting.
Aesthetic value vs. market value is an endless debate but unless you build a collection as if you would buy an index fund, I don't see the point of discarding crystals just because they don't comply with the jewelry industry standards.
And this is why (among other obvious reasons such as scarcity and budget) I look primarily for attractive association specimens.
What really strikes me as I keep collecting is the infinite variations of this beautiful mineral.

Another specimen part of the 2010 find at the Acuario Mine in Chivor that exhibited those pencil-like termination crystals.
Lustrous/iridescent dolomite matrix coated with well-crystallized intergrown pyrite octahedrons.

PostPosted: Jun 26, 2016 10:30    Post subject: Re: Collection of Fiebre Verde - La Pita (#398)

Sainte-Marie is not even over yet and already the countdown has started – only 361 days left before the next show.
But how to fill the void in the meantime?
Maybe I could post more beryl specimens - here we go.

In this small La Pita specimen, the beryl crystal is contacted with calcite and dolomite.
Host rock is black shale.

I love Pyrite, but when it is adorned with Emerald , it is fabulous.

Thanks for sharing your enthusiasm Philippe!
Agree - crystallized pyrite would have added another dimension to this specimen.

Albite is almost entirely oxidized in this specimen.
Host rock is a bedded grey limestone which is a characteristic feature of the Chivor area.

Double terminated crystal.
The close-up images show that the main beryl crystal is partly hollow.on one end
There seem to be a consensus that hollow crystals result from a rapid growth mechanism e.g. not from dissolution or etching.
Emeralds with hollow tubes all the way through the crystal can be found in the Chivor district.
Host rock is black shale.

PostPosted: Jul 13, 2016 15:34    Post subject: Re: Collection of Fiebre Verde - Peñas Blancas (#513)

Most crystals of this aggregate are terminated.
Typical Peñas Blancas creamy calcite on iron-stained coarse-grained black shale matrix.
A small white patch of calcium carbonate can be noticed in the middle of the specimen (upper center of the first image)..
Although quartz is abundant in Peñas Blancas, the specimen has no quartz at all.

Those images do not do justice to how attractive these beryl crystals are.
