The storage unit at the east of the museum is being nicely utilized! Where did we keep all this stuff before?

One of my favorite calcite-on-copper specimens. This one from the Copper Falls Mine. It was originally in the L. L. Hubbard collection. Now in the A. E. Seaman Mineral Museum collection.

The museum staff have been busy making room in the galleries, and installing minerals in the "Michigan Iron Country" gallery. Here are a few photos of the gallery as it is being set up.

Hello,

Super images of wonderful specimens, probably not widely known but classic for the Great Lakes region. These minerals are among my favorites.

Last week had the pleasure of a brief tour by George Robinson of this developing exhibit at a slightly earlier stage. George showed me some large groutite specimens from the Minnesota ranges and recently acquired by the museum. You might feature those pieces in the future as well as other minerals from northern Minnesota.

It is peculiar that northern Minnesota is not better known for fine minerals of the Great Lakes Iron District despite the large amount of ore that comes from those mines over the years but perhaps collecting was less popular or not encouraged. Collecting was encouraged at the Montreal Mine in Wisconsin (Gogebic Range) and that mine certainly produced classics. But note that in John's post a variety of mines are represented. I have run into some collectors who only want Montreal Mine pieces in their collection. In my opinion that is nearsighted and could encourage mislabeling of specimens. John's post indicates the wide variety of mines that produced fine pieces.

Please continue to keep us informed of progress at the Seaman Museum!

George Balogh

Sorry these images aren't as sharp as when I can do them in a proper studio, but at least you can get an idea of the displays as I shoot them through the glass with my
simple camera..

Most of the cases show minerals from a particular range, along with some brief explanatory text and a photo of the site.
